Old National Centre 10/31/19
I like COIN enough that sometimes I’ll seek out a song or two of theirs. For me this is significant – for the bands that aren’t my top favorites I usually either search out songs or just throw on a random playlist and come across their songs by chance. I really like “Talk Too Much” and found myself jamming to a few other of their tunes.
I liked COIN enough that if I had gotten lucky with a free ticket entry to their concert that I’d definitely go. I went on Halloween to the concert with my 2 free tickets and a friend, dressed in my go to costume: my kilt. I was excited for the promise of live music. We didn’t listen to the opener, instead chatting and making some new friends.
The setlist:
- Lately II
- Growing Pains
- Simple Romance
- Boyfriend
- Cemetery
- I Don’t Wanna Dance
- Atlas
- Nobody’s Baby
- I Want It All
- Malibu 1992?
- Pyramid Scheme (keyboard & vocals only)
- Monster Mash (cover, played it as a slow keyboard only ballad)
- Time Machine
- Hannah
- Heart Eyes
- Crash My Car
- Talk Too Much
- Fingers Crossed
- Feeling
I didn’t fall in love with COIN at the concert. I still like COIN and will continue to listen to them as they come on with the occasional seek out of a couple of their songs. I think as performers they put on a good show. The lead vocalist is extremely talented. I just didn’t fall in love. I think part of it was the way the sound was balanced out in the venue. They had a heavy hit of bass and the lyrics weren’t as clear as I would have hoped. If the balance was different maybe my experience would have been too. Another thing that held me back was that the drum backbone was very similar for most of the songs. I could be wrong, but it definitely looked and sounded similar for a lot of them. I have no issue with this (I actually don’t mind Nickelback), it was just something I noticed.
All that aside, COIN had a decent stage presence and I’d see them again. Though I think it would have to be part of some larger show or another free ticket. Not a concert I’m dying to relive.
